The Great Gatsby

“……It was all very careless and confused. They smashed up things and creatures and

then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness,or

whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…….”

This quote clearly describes who Daisy and Tom are as a couple and individually. They are people who could careless about the people around them, they hurt and cause chaos, and then they expect people there to take the responsibility for them and clean up their messes, its like they are in this bubble of contentment with each other, yet outside that bubble they leave confusion and a careless lifestyle for other people to clean up for them. They are a selfish, confused, and conceited group of people who only think about themselves. Their selfishness causes them to be careless with people, smashing them in their wake. I think that this somehow reflects on who we are as humans and that sometimes we act like Daisy and Tom. We have a little of them in us, we as human beings are careless and continually confused when things don’t work out the way we want it to, or things in our life become increasingly chaotic. We then retreat into our selves, into what makes us feel safe and secure, although in the process we leave a mess for other people around us to clean up, we destroy people with our careless emotions and actions, and then we expect other people to pick up the pieces of our mess. We recluse ourselves in this bubble that is full of suffocating selfishness, and it destroys anything in our path.
